Hindu system divides human into three different groups know as Gana Kuta. Which means compatibility of temperament which is essential in a happy marriage. The three Temperament of nature are 1. Deva (divine) 2. Manushya (human), 3. and Rakshasa (demon). The devas represent a spiritual and charitable nature with goodness of character. The Manushya are more of the world and represent a mixture of positive and negative qualities. The Rakshasa suggest dominance, self-will, and the potential for violence.
The idea here is that it is most compatible to marry within your guna or temperament. Thus, it is best if you have the same temperament (guna) as your mate. This is one of the main reasons for the high divorce rate in the west.
Do not make the mistake, that you can change your partner, or that your partner will change when they understand your need! People seldom change for their own well being, how can you expect them to change for you
